The San Diego Board of Supervisors has voted to dissolve the last volunteer fire department in San Diego County, the Julian Cuyamaca Fire Department, and essentially absorb it into the San Diego County Fire Authority.

Until recently, the Julian Cuyamaca Fire Protection District (JCFPD) board resisted joining the County Fire Authority, which was formed following the devastating 2003 and 2007 wildfires. The decision to dissolve the volunteer department is controversial and may come down to a vote of JCFPD taxpayers.

Those who want to retain the volunteer department say they feel safer with local firefighters who know the back roads and provide quality, personalized service to the community.
