Explorer Program Prepares High School Kids for a Career in Firefighting

Fire hose training for cadets

Each year fire chiefs across the County identify a significant fire/emergency issue they need help with, and the Fire Foundation asks supporters to donate towards the solution. This year, your donation will address two large community issues:

  • Firefighter shortages due to retirements and transfers
  • Disadvantaged youth graduating with no career path

With retirements and firefighters transferring out of county, there is a shortage of qualified candidates to join our county’s fire departments. At the same time, we have many disadvantaged youth (low income, rural and minorities) coming out of high school with no identified career path.
An Explorer Firefighter program will be established in high schools with a high number of disadvantaged students to teach firefighting and emergency medical skills and prepare them to serve as reserve or probationary firefighters upon high school graduation.

Our goal is to raise $30,000 to provide uniforms, helmets, and equipment for these Explorer Firefighters, as well as providing firefighting courses.

We have a donor that will match donations through $10,000. Thus the first $10,000 in donations received will be matched dollar-for-dollar.

Please help enable a disadvantaged youth become a community hero as a firefighter.
